The Daily Drum Today’s drum is dedicated to the memory of Jean Abram, who recently passed away and returned to the Creator. Jean held a special love for my turtle images. During one of my drum-painting workshops, she beautifully painted the central background of this very drum. (pictured in center) Before her passing, she had asked me to paint a turtle on it—a wish I have now fulfilled in her honour. This special drum will be auctioned today during Jean’s salité. Service Details: Wake: Senior’s Centre in Millbrook, beginning Monday, August 31st at 12:00 PM and continuing until the funeral. Funeral Mass: Sacred Heart Church, Millbrook, on Wednesday, September 2nd at 11:30 AM, with Father Gregory Nduka officiating. Jean Abram shared a mutual bond of respect with the artist Alan Syliboy. She was especially fond of his turtle paintings. While attending a workshop with Alan, Jean began crafting a drum, painting its background herself with the intention of having Alan complete it with his signature turtles. Following Jean's passing, Alan lovingly finished the drum in her honour.This beautiful piece (pictured here) will be available at Jean’s salité. The salité will take place at the Nora Bernard Community Centre in Millbrook, following her Funeral Mass on Wednesday, September 2nd at 11:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church (Millbrook, NS). For those unable to attend in person, a webcasting stream will begin at 11:28 AM ADT. A proud and dedicated member of the Millbrook community, Jean spent much of her life in service to others. She honorably served as an official Tribal Police Woman and was a proud Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. ...

The Daily Drum Today I am featuring a “Six-sided Q The Daily Drum Today I am featuring a “Six-sided Quill Drum”. The intricate art and fine detail the Mi’kmaq Quill decorated boxes were highly sought after, and traded throughout North America and Europe. The Mi’kmaq were often referred to as the “porcupine people” because of their elaborate quill work. The quill work on birch bark was an ancient art that the Mi’kmaq specialized in. The attention to detail and sophisticated patterns made our quill work easily distinguishable compared to other Native quill work. Have a Great Day!
