May 28, 2025The Daily DrumToday I am featuring two whale drums and a round dance drum in front of Loneclouds Cabin. These drums are pictured beside two totem poles. Totem poles have long been more than mere art; they are the silent storytellers of the Mi’kmaq nation. The top creature represents a Thunderbird which is a mythical bird or spirit-like creature revered as a powerful spirit. The middle figure represents the eagle who is responsible to deliver prayers to the creator. The bottom figure represents the wolf which is considered to be medicine to Indigenous people.Have a Great Day! ... See MoreSee Less

Today I am featuring a special eight-pointed star drum surrounded by a Moose, a Caribou and two eagle feathers. The Mi'kmaq tradition says the eagle is the only bird that has touched the face of the creator. The Eagle has been given the responsibility of carrying the prayers of the people to the Creator.

The Daily Drum
In Mi'kmaq culture, the whale is a significant spirit animal, representing wisdom, longevity, and a connection to the ocean's depths. Whales are also seen as protectors and guides, especially for those who travel or are exploring new areas. The Mi'kmaq have a deep and long-standing relationship with whales, as they are also a source of food and a symbol of respect and status, according to The Daily Drum.

Today I am posting “The Archer”.
Mi'kmaq were skilled archers and used bows and arrows to hunt a variety of animals, including moose, bear, beaver, and caribou. Bows were made from maple wood, and arrowheads were crafted from bone, antler, stone, or copper.

Today’s drum once again features “ The Eel”.
A particular favourite in the mi’kmaw diet has always been eel. At a traditional feast, some Elders would bring eel stew or eel soup. It was a sign of both respect and status.

The Daily Drum
North American horses disappeared around 8000-10,000 year ago. They disappeared around the same time as other large mammals like Wooly Mammoths. In the early 1500’s colonists re-introduced horses to North America They rapidly spread over North America and provided improved transportation for native americans.

This story is built around the Mi’kmaq legend, “The Stone Canoe,” in which the Thundermaker story is embedded.
Painted on this drum the Thundermaker stands guard as spirits cross the Milky Way back to the Creator.

Today I am featuring the “Eight Pointed Star” surrounded by four whales.
The eight-point star is believed to be an updated version of the seven-point star; which the Mi’kmaq used to represent the seven districts of their nation. The Mi’kmaq nation grew to eight districts with the addition of Taqmkuk (Newfoundland). And the Mi’kmaq updated the star to eight-points to welcome their brothers and sisters from Newfoundland.

The Daily Drum Todays drum is dedicated to Chief The Daily Drum
Todays drum is dedicated to Chief Membertou who was appointed Grand Chief of the Mi’kmaq First Nations tribe near Port Royal. His exact date of birth is not known, however he claimed to be a grown man when he first met Jacques Cartier, which would mean he was probably born in the early years of the sixteenth century.
I painted this image for Queen Elizabeth, and presented it to her in 2010.
