The eight-point star is believed to be an updated version of the seven-point star; which the Mi’kmaq used to represent the seven districts of their nation. The Mi’kmaq nation grew to eight districts with the addition of Taqmkuk (Newfoundland). The Daily Drum Todays drum is dedicated to Chief Membertou who was appointed Grand Chief of the Mi’kmaq First Nations tribe near Port Royal. His exact date of birth is not known, however he claimed to be a grown man when he first met Jacques Cartier, which would mean he was probably born in the early years of the sixteenth century. The Daily DrumI have been thinking about the relationship between Mi’kmaq and whales for many years now.If you compare whales and the Mi’kmaq, our journeys have been very similar. The Daily Drum Today’s drum once again features The Daily Drum
Today’s drum once again features “ The Eel”.
A particular favourite in the mi’kmaw diet has always been eel. At a traditional feast, some Elders would bring eel stew or eel soup. It was a sign of both respect and status.

The Daily Drum
North American horses disappeared around 8000-10,000 year ago. They disappeared around the same time as other large mammals like Wooly Mammoths. In the early 1500’s colonists re-introduced horses to North America They rapidly spread over North America and provided improved transportation for native americans.

This story is built around the Mi’kmaq legend, “The Stone Canoe,” in which the Thundermaker story is embedded.
Painted on this drum the Thundermaker stands guard as spirits cross the Milky Way back to the Creator.

The Mi’kmaq believe there are spirits and people among us who can bridge the spirit world and physical world.

The Daily Drum

Turtles play positive roles in the folklore of many Native American tribes. Turtles are a symbol of the earth in many different Native cultures. They are associated with long life, protection, fertility, healing, wisdom, and spirituality.

Little Thunder and Wolverine celebrate the installation of my new sculpture which was unveiled on the Pictou Nova Scotia water front September 25, 2024. This sculpture, now a permanent installation was funded by the new Pictou Library which also opened on that date.

The traditional mask was created in a variety of sizes, shapes and forms. They were made of many different types of materials, and were decorated with ribbon, paint and ornaments. Each mask has a unique symbolic meaning.
